Despite the departure of ABC’s hit television series “Lost” earlier this year, Honolulu continues to be a hotspot for Hollywood-type activity in 2010.
Oahu-based “Lost” fans were comforted to learn that Korean hottie — and genuinely nice guy — Daniel Dae Kim would be sticking around to co-star in “Hawaii Five-0,” set to launch on CBS this fall. Then, word came that filming for the fourth installment of the blockbuster “Pirates of the Carribbean” franchise would take place here as well.
For a lot of residents, that meant just one thing — Johnny Depp would be on the rock. And as it turns out, he likes to party just like the rest of us.
Depp, along with “Pirates” producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Rob Marshall and co-star Geoffrey Rush have all spent time at Apartment3 in the Century Center. According to co-owner Flash Hansen, everyone associated with the production has been incredibly nice to both fellow diners and the restaurant’s staff.

Having two Don Drapers as dads. Apartment 3, the love child of Honolulu’s entrepreneurs of contempo-cool, Flash and Matty Boy, is turning a year old on July 31. Located on the–you guessed it–third floor of the Century Center Building, this stylish little lounge, with its rich amber lighting, faux alligator skin ceilings and TV sets screening Tim Burton classics on repeat, has come a long way since its debut last summer. Happy hour for grown-ups
Apartment3 offers sophistication and tasty appetizers at your own pace

Australians of a certain age should be able to recall — granted, with various degrees of clarity — what was once called the “6 o’clock swill.”

This not-so-happy hour ritual became part of weekday life down under after the Australian equivalent of Mothers Against Drunk Driving got a law passed that forced bars to close at 6 p.m. That gave people who got off work at 5 p.m. just one short hour to “swill” as much as they could before last call.

Fortunately, saner minds eventually prevailed and the law was repealed.

There might be establishments in Honolulu today where the pau hana vibe is about speed-drinking and bottom-of-the-well pours, but Apartment3 offers a far more mature and sophisticated happy-hour experience.

Apartment3′s menu revamped, improved
Night spot features comfort food with a chef’s flair added

Last year, party promoter darlings Flash Hansen and Matty Boy partnered with veteran restaurateur Chip Jewitt to convert Jewitt’s Aria restaurant into a dinner-only joint that would be part restaurant, part lounge, part late-night club house.

The revamped restaurant opened as Apartm3nt (pronounced “apartment three,” its name a nod to its location on the third floor of the Century Center complex). Since then — that was about nine months ago — the place has undergone a few changes. Some of them minor: The spelling of the name is now Apartment3, for clarity. And some of the changes were more significant: a new chef and menu.

The owners of Apartment3 have been concentrating on their kitchen offerings over the past several months, and the hiring of Executive Chef Robert McGee looks like a winner. McGee comes to the Islands from Portland, Ore., where he was head chef at Slow Bar. If the sample online reviews of his former establishment–“Orgasmic.” “Mouthwatering.” “The perfect burger.”–are any guide, McGee has good things in store.
